Thailand announced the discovery of nearly 15 million tons of lithium ore, which is expected to become the third largest lithium reserve country in the world. Today, the price of lithium carbonate remained unchanged at 96500 yuan/ton.
IT Home, January 20th - According to the Bangkok Post, on Thursday local time, the Deputy Spokesperson of the Thai Prime Minister's Office announced the discovery of two lithium mines with abundant reserves in the local province of Panya, which are expected to be used to produce power batteries for electric vehicles.
The spokesperson cited data from Thailand's Ministry of Basic Industry and Mining, stating that the discovered lithium ore reserves exceeded 14.8 million tons, most of which are located in the southern province of Panya. This discovery means that Thailand will become the world's third-largest lithium reserve country after Bolivia and Argentina.
Geologist Alongkok Fanka from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand stated that the average lithium content in these lithium deposits is about 0.4%, higher than in other parts of the world. Another lecturer at the school, Jessada Denduangboripant, stated that 14.8 million tons of lithium ore contain pegmatite containing approximately 0.45% lithium. After rough calculations, approximately 60000 to 70000 tons of lithium metal can be extracted from these ores.
Jessada stated that if there is a calculation error or misunderstanding, others are welcome to clarify or provide additional explanations.
For Thailand, having feasible lithium deposits would be very beneficial as the country is rapidly becoming a production base for electric vehicles and hopes to establish a complete supply chain to further enhance its attractiveness to automotive investors.
