Li Metal Company recently announced that it is the first company in the world to extract lithium metal directly from lithium carbonate. The company is currently testing the patent process at its factory in markham, Ontario.

The company claims that the direct production of metallic lithium from lithium carbonate does not require corrosive raw materials such as lithium chloride, thus eliminating the chlorine gas produced in traditional production process of metallic lithium. This technology reduces the impact on the environment and minimizes the demand for expensive processing equipment, while also improving process efficiency.

The key component of the next generation lithium ion battery is the lithium metal negative electrode. Compared with traditional lithium ion batteries, the energy density of lithium metal anodes has been significantly improved. At present, more than 90% of lithium metal in the world is produced in China.
