On July 2, the domestic shipping industry ushered in a major breakthrough. The first batch of green methanol produced by China National Offshore Oil Corporation, which uses urban kitchen waste as raw material, successfully completed the refueling operation of the "COSCO Shipping Yangpu", the first domestic methanol dual-fuel container ship, at Hainan Yangpu Port. China National Offshore Oil Corporation's green methanol products have successfully achieved the whole industry chain from production, sales to commercial operation, and created a new paradigm of green shipping of "Chinese ships use Chinese methanol, and Chinese ports refuel".

China National Offshore Oil Corporation's green methanol uses biogas produced by fermentation of urban kitchen waste, animal feces and other waste as raw materials, realizing resource recycling and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It is a truly full-life cycle green fuel (full life cycle refers to greenhouse gas emissions from the entire life cycle from fuel production to final use on board).

Feng Huasheng, from the Hainan Project Team of the Green Methanol Working Group of CNOOC Petrochemical Co., Ltd., said: "Compared with traditional fossil fuels such as diesel, the 200 tons of green methanol added this time can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 325 tons, which is equivalent to the carbon sink effect of planting more than 19,000 trees, far exceeding the 65% emission reduction capacity required by the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED)."

In May this year, the Green Methanol Project of CNOOC Petrochemical Co., Ltd. passed the International Sustainable Development and Carbon Certification (ISCC Certification) and won the first domestic ISCC EU certificate for green methanol using municipal waste as raw materials certified by the EU. ISCC is an internationally used bioenergy certification system, and its influence has covered more than 100 countries and regions, which means that the green methanol product has obtained a pass to enter the international market with high standards of emission reduction.

Against the backdrop of the global shipping industry accelerating its green transformation, green methanol is expected to become one of the most promising clean fuels to help the shipping industry achieve its emission reduction targets. Li Yong, Hainan Special Project Manager of the Green Methanol Department of CNOOC Petrochemical Co., Ltd., revealed: "In the next step, we will expand the scale of methanol production from urban garbage to 3,000 tons/year, and at the same time conduct research on a 20,000-ton/year biomass gasification demonstration project. In addition, the existing equipment will be transformed into a low-carbon one."

The completion of this refueling operation has made Hainan Province the first province in China to have the ability to integrate the "full chain of production and refueling" of green methanol, and for the first time verified the feasibility of the domestic green methanol "production, supply, storage and refueling" integrated model, setting a new milestone for the construction of domestic green energy refueling ports and the green transformation of the shipping industry.

"The successful refueling of green methanol this time not only promotes the transformation of shipping fuel structure, but also explores a new path for the resource utilization of organic waste." Wu Hongsheng, head of the Green Methanol Working Group of CNOOC Petrochemical Co., Ltd., said, "In the future, CNOOC Petrochemical Co., Ltd. will continue to deepen green energy technology innovation and contribute wisdom and strength to the green and low-carbon transformation of energy."
